At High Mowing Seeds in Wolcott
“Field Day”
2:00-5:00

As Part of NOFA-Vermont's Summer Workshop Series, Salvation Farms (SF) is hosting "Hands On, How To Gleaning." This interactive session, with director and founder Theresa Snow, will focus on how to set up a gleaning project in your community. You will gain experience through assisting with the afternoons glean at High Mowing Seeds. A "How to Guide" for gleaning will be available for you to bring home. In 2006, SF gleaned over 7000 pounds of marketable produce from High Mowing Seeds' trial fields. All produce is donated to various human service agencies, non-profit organizations, agencies working for hunger relief locally, and the Vermont Foodbank.

High Mowing Seeds was presented with the Sustainable Business of the Year award this year from the Small Business Development Center of Central Vermont, in response to our donation efforts with Salvation Farms and our packet donation program to various garden projects.

Contact Theresa Snow for more details at 802-888-5055 or send an email to salvagedonation@yahoo.com

Salvation Farms was founded by one Sterling College Alumni and one Sterling College Senior. The College’s Mission: The Sterling College community combines structured academic study with experiential challenges and plain hard work to build responsible problem solvers who become stewards of the environment as they pursue productive lives.

This has been the moral and educational foundation from which Salvation Farms started and continues to grow. We aim to impact our community through practical experiences that provide education through self-challenge and engagement.

Every volunteer we work with learns something new from each experience with Salvation Farms. Most learn about fresh foods, what it looks like in the field, new kinds of veggies, how to harvest and handle produce. Others learn about the emergency food systems and resources in the area and in Vermont. Some learn about themselves and their communities, meeting new people, and making new friends. Our hope is that individuals will find the salvation provided by securing their community’s resources close to home while working with others to lighten the burden and share in the harvest.

On the grounds of Salvation Farms headquarters, in the quiet country of North Wolcott, we are pleased to announce the vision and planning of an Education, Demonstration, and Donation (EDD) Garden. This will also include a spring workshop series and late summer workshop series. Most workshops will be agriculture, nutrition, or sustainability based. We will be inviting the public to get involved for many occasions during 2007 to learn about starting seeds, garden planning, maintaining a compost pile, preserving foods, harvesting & weeding, seed saving, the list goes on…. This garden will also allow us the opportunity to engage donation recipients that may be unable to glean with Salvation Farms but are interested in an agricultural experience. We look forward to sharing major EDD Garden responsibilities with any intern who joins us within the growing and planning seasons.

Salvation Farms is honored to announce being included in the nomination by Sterling College for the Vermont Campus Compact Engaged Community Partner Award. The award recognizes a group that… “works to support the civic mission of their partnering campus”….and offers “vital links for engaging campuses and students to meet critical needs in the community.” We are pleased to be listed amongst some of the finest farmers and farm organizations in our area. Thanks Sterling!

Sterling College writes, “This group of Craftsbury area agricultural enterprises has offered an invaluable resource for learning, work, and service here at Sterling College. Community partners enhance the life of the local community and enhance learning for our students at Sterling. Service learning continues as some of these farming endeavors serve as sites for senior’s research project. One of the seniors, Jen O’Donnell, (Senior Applied Research Project) …led directly to the expansion of gleaning work for Salvation Farms. We currently have students working regularly with Salvation Farms …which harvest and donate food from many of the farms on the list. This service organization in turn cooperates with many partnering farms on our list.”

We've rented a building!!!
